Winter Garden Theatre

ABBA songs provide a framework for the hit Broadway musical “Mamma Mia!” playing at Cadillac Winter Garden Theatre at 1634 Broadway. “Mamma Mia!” follows the story of a bride and her single mother who is haunted by three men from her past. Is one of them the father of the bride? Only “Mamma Mia!” tickets can answer that question.

Winter Garden Theatre is a veritable goldmine of Broadway history and hit Broadway shows while setting performance records along its way. Originally, the American Horse Exchange building, Winter Garden Theatre’s interior, was completely redesigned in 1922. Its Broadway show premiere introduced Al Jolson to the Great White Way. Early theater highlights included Fanny Brice, Bob Hope, Josephine Baker, Gypsy Rose Lee, Milton Berle, Rosiland Russel, and Phil Silvers. A series of long-running musical extravaganzas came next. Winter Garden Theatre ticket stubs could show the 1957 opening of “West Side Story” or 1964’s “Funny Girl” starring Barbara Streisand which had a 1,348-performance run. Broadway shows that followed include a 1,508-performance run of “Mame” starring Angela Lansbury, Bea Arthur, and Frankie Michaels. “Gypsy” followed in 1974; “Beatlemania” in 1977, and “42nd St.” which ran for 3,486 performances. “Cats” became the longest running Broadway show to date with 7,485 performances. “Mamma Mia!” opened in 2001 with more than a year’s worth of seats sold in advance, proving that anytime is a good time to “Take a Chance” on “Mamma Mia!” tickets at the Winter Garden Theatre.
