When Broadway theater Producers try to make a flop, the result is the most Tony Awards in Broadway history. You can see The Producers at St. James Theatre, 246 W. 44th St. Built as the Erlanger Theatre in 1927, the St. James Theatre suffered the turbulent fate of many Broadway theaters following the depression. Resuming Broadway shows in 1938, St. James Theatre saw performances by Katherine Hepburn, Stockard Channing, Raul Julia, Tyne Daly, Twiggy, Mandy Patankin, and Glenn Close.
Rodgers and Hammerstein's first Broadway musical, Oklahoma, kicked off 2,212 performances in 1943. When Rodgers and Hammerstein teamed up with Yul Brynner in The King and I, all won Tony awards. Bob Fosse made his Broadway choreography debut at St. James Theatre in 1954. Hello Dolly, a reworked version of two previous plays, opened in 1964 and ran through 1980. Carol Channing, Ginger Rogers, Martha Raye, Betty Grable, Pearl Bailey, Phyllis Diller, and Ethel Merman all took a turn as the role of Dolly. In 1993, a Broadway version of The Who's Tommy started an 899-performance run.
