Neil Simon theatre

The Neil Simon Theater seems to be the place that play characters prefer to grow up. Hairspray theater tickets will help you step back or just step to the music with the 1960s musical comedy. The Neil Simon Theatre's namesake became famous with his coming-of age plays, Brighton Beach Memoirs from 1983 and Biloxi Blues from 1985, where Matthew Broderick grew up and earned a Tony Award. Even Annie cut her teeth on Broadway at the Neil Simon Theatre in 1977, garnering four Tony Awards as she waited for that sun to come out.

Opened as the Alvin Theater in 1927, Fred Astaire and Adele Astaire performed in the premiere production Funny Face. CBS used the Neil Simon Theatre as a radio studio in the 30s and 40s. The Shubert family purchased it in 1975, later renaming the New York City landmark. Early Neil Simon Theatre highlights include the 1930 Gershwin classic Girl Crazy featuring Ethel Merman and Ginger Rogers. Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, Jimmy Dorsey and Gene Krupa played in the orchestra. A 1948 stage version of Mr. Roberts starred Henry Fonda and ran for 1,157 performances at Neil Simon Theatre. James Earl Jones and Jane Alexander earned a Tony Award in 1968 when they performed the Pulitzer Prize winning The Great White Hope at the Neil Simon Theatre.
