On the women's side, Serena Williams defeated Lindsay Davenport to win her seventh grand slam title and her first in 18 months. After winning four consecutive grand slam titles from the 2002 French Open to the 2003 Australian Open, a series of setbacks hampered her and had tennis critics questioning her tennis ability. With the win in the Australian Open, Serena Williams put herself and American women's tennis back in the spotlight early in the season.

The Australian Open began in 1905 and celebrated its 100th year last year. However, there has only been competition in Melbourne 92 times due to the World Wars. Melbourne Park first opened in 1988 and can hold 250,000 spectators. The final round of the Australian Open takes place in Rod Laver Arena. Named after the greatest tennis player in Australian history, Rod Laver Arena has a capacity of 15,000 people. The Australian Open is the only Grand Slam tournament that can feature indoor play.
