Supercross is a highly competitive sport in which participants race around man-made dirt tracks on high-performance off-road motorcycles. Supercross was derived from motocross, and there are noticeable differences between the two.
Supercross is generally held in indoor stadiums, which makes for smaller tracks than the traditional outdoor motocross tracks. Race lengths are shorter in supercross; races tend to last only 22 minutes, while motocross can last as long as 40 minutes. There are typically a number of qualifying races, and the champion is thought to have advanced technical skills.
The AMA began holding a variety of amateur and Pro-Am motocross races in the late sixties. Motocross was brought into sports stadiums and the term “supercross” was coined from a combination of “Super Bowl” and “Motocross.” Supercross flourished in the ‘80s and ‘90s, and the AMA/EA Sports Motocross series began. The AMA/EA Sports Motocross evolved into a series of video games for Nintendo 64, Play Station and Play Station 2.
