San Jose Sharks
|HP Pavilion at San Jose Tickets|
When the National Hockey League granted San Jose and NHL team, the team needed a place to call home. HP Pavilion at San Jose was built with the San Jose Sharks in mind, but has been used for hundreds of events throughout the years.
HP Pavilion broke ground in 1991. Construction of HP Pavilion cost $162.5 million. HP Pavilion is owned and operated by the city of San Jose. When HP Pavilion opened in 1993, it was called San Jose Arena until 2001, when it was called Compaq Center at San Jose. Hewlett Packard purchased Compaq and spent $3.13 million a year for naming rights until 2015, with an option to continue until 2018.
On average, 184 events each year are held at HP Pavilion. Other events that have been held at HP Pavilion include the 2001 WWE SummerSlam, the U.S. Figure Skating Championships, and HP Pavilion is one of the venues used during the NCAA Basketball Tournament. In a ninth-month period that ended on September 30, 2004, HP Pavilion had sold the most tickets to non-sporting events of any venue in the United States. That total also put HP Pavilion the third-highest seller in the world.
HP Pavilion holds a maximum capacity crowd of 20,000 people. Basketball draws a crowd of 18,500 and 17,483 is capacity for hockey. Other events at HP Pavilion can fit anywhere from 16,000 to 20,000 people, depending on what HP Pavilion is being used for at the time.
The first event at HP Pavilion was the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus, which had a six-day stop in San Jose from September 8 to September 12, 1993. The first regular season NHL game featured the San Jose Sharks and the visiting Calgary Flames October 14, 1993. In their first season at HP Pavilion, the San Jose Sharks sold 96.5 percent of their capacity.
The Golden State Warriors also played at HP Pavilion for their 1996-97 season, but the team now plays its home games at Oakland Arena. In addition to the San Jose Sharks, the San Jose Sabrecats of the Arena Football League and the San Jose Stealth of the National Lacrosse League also call HP Pavilion home.
