BankAtlantic Center

BankAtlantic Center is located in Sunrise, Florida, right outside of Ft. Lauderdale. The Florida Panthers of the National Hockey League call BankAtlantic Center home.

Groundbreaking for the BankAtlantic Center began in October of 1996. BankAtlantic Center was completed in time for the 1998-99 NHL season. At a cost of $212 million, almost all publicly financed, Bank Atlantic Center hosts a variety of events each year.

The 872,000-square-foot BankAtlantic Center was designed by architects Ellerbe Beckett and was given a challenge to finish the BankAtlantic Center in 26 months. Prior to the completion of the BankAtlantic Center, Ellerbe Beckett had never finished building an arena in less than 31 months. The 26 months it took to build BankAtlantic Center is the shortest amount of time any NHL arena was constructed.

BankAtlantic Center features 70 suites and 2,300 club seats. As the premier sports and entertainment arena in South Florida, the 70 suites at BankAtlantic Center average over 650 square feet, and are some of the largest in the country. Prior to being called the BankAtlantic Center, previous names include Broward County Civic Arena, National Car Rental Arena, and Office Depot Center.

While the Florida Panthers are the main tenants of BankAtlantic Center and seat a capacity crowd of 19,452 for hockey, BankAtlantic Center has a variety of seating options dependent on what the arena is hosting. Basketball games at BankAtlantic Center hold 20,737 people, while stage-end concerts hold between 15,207 and 21,371. Boxing, center-stage concerts, and wrestling events yield a maximum crowd of 22,457.

The first NHL game at BankAtlantic Center was October 9, 1998 when the Florida Panthers hosted the Tampa Bay Lightning. Other events that have passed through BankAtlantic Center include various types of family shows, trade shows, ice shows, and concerts including Motley Crue.
