St. Pete Times Forum

The St. Pete Times Forum is located in Tampa. Home to the National Hockey League's Tampa Bay Lightning, the St. Pete Times Forum also hosts over 150 events each year. Originally known as the Ice Palace, the St. Pete Times Forum was built in 1996.

Seating in the St. Pete Times Forum ranges from 19,500 for hockey to 21,500 for center-staged events, such as Paul McCartney, the Rolling Stones, and U2. St. Pete Times Forum features 28 luxury suites just 20 rows removed from the playing surface, as well as another tier of 43 suites on a higher level.

Before playing in the St. Pete Times Forum, the Tampa Bay Lightning played in the ThunderDome, which is now known as Tropicana Field, current home to Major League Baseball's Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Prior to the decision for the St. Pete Times Forum to go in the Downtown Tampa Channel District, plans for building an arena on Tampa Sports Authority near Tampa Stadium fell through. The ThunderDome held an NHL-record opening night crowd of 27,227 in 1993.

The St. Petes Times Forum was financed by a unique public/private ownership. Included in the ownership were the city of Tampa, Hillsborough County, the state of Florida, and Lightning Partners, Ltd. An estimated total cost of construction was $160 million. Since it first opened in 1996, control of St. Pete Times Forum has changed three times. Ownership of the arena is tied to the Tampa Bay Lightning, and Palace Sports and Entertainment currently operate the arena.

The first NHL game at St. Pete Times Forum took place October 20, 1996 when the Tampa Bay Lightning took on the New York Rangers. In 1999, the St. Pete Times Forum hosted the NHL All-Star game. The Tampa Bay Lighting claimed their first-ever Stanley Cup on the ice of St. Pete Times Forum on June 7, 2004. Other events scheduled to be hosted at the St. Pete Times Forum include the ACC Men's Basketball Tournament in 2007, the Women's Basketball Final Four in 2008, and the 2012 NCAA Frozen Four hockey final.
