Prior to moving into Air Canada Centre, the Toronto Maple Leafs of the National Hockey League called Maple Leaf Gardens home. When it was determined that Maple Leaf Gardens was too small and too aged for modern times, a new stadium was needed in Toronto, Ontario.

Air Canada Centre construction first broke ground in March of 1997 and opened just under two years later, in February 1999. Owned by Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, Air Canada Centre cost $265 million Canadian to build. Air Canada paid $240 million Canadian over 20 years for naming rights. Measuring in at 650,000 square feet, Air Canada Centre is one of the premier sports and entertainment facilities in North America.

Air Canada Centre features a variety of seating options. For basketball, Air Canada Centre has a capacity of 19,800 seats as do sold-out concerts. Hockey at Air Canada Centre seats 18,800 and theatre events at Air Canada Centre fill just 5,200 seats. Air Canada Centre features 1,020 club seats, 65 executive suites, and 32 theatre seats, as well as three Group Sales Areas.

Air Canada Centre can go from the basketball set up to the hockey set up within four to six hours. Since the Toronto Raptors of the National Basketball Association also call Air Canada Centre home, Air Canada Centre is one of only nine other venues in the NBA to feature a separate practice court within the arena.

The first NHL game to take place at Air Canada Centre featured the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Montreal Canadians on February 20, 1999. Other events to take place at Air Canada Centre include the WWE SummerSlam in 2004 and the first major league championship at Air Canada Centre when the Toronto Rock defeated the Arizona Sting on May 14, 2005 to win the National Lacrosse Champion's Cup.
