Staples Center Stadium

The Los Angeles Staples Center is home to the Los Angeles Kings of the National Hockey League and the Los Angeles Clippers and Los Angeles Lakers of the National Basketball Association. In addition to hosting the Los Angeles Clippers, Los Angeles Kings and Los Angeles Lakers games, the Staples Center hosts various events throughout the year, such as rock concerts by the Rolling Stones and U2.

Staples Center first opened in October 1999. Cost of constructing STAPLES Center was $275 million. Staples, Inc. paid $100 million for naming rights for 20 years. The 900,000-square-foot facility holds 20,000 for basketball and 19,000 for hockey. Prior to calling the Staples Center home, the Los Angeles Kings and Los Angeles Lakers played at the Great Western Forum, and the Los Angeles Clippers played at the Sports Arena in Exposition Park.

Over 230 events are held each year at Staples Center, and over 3 million guests visit the Staples Center yearly. In addition to sporting events, Staples Center is also used for concerts and award shows including the Grammy Awards. The 2000 Democratic National Convention was held at Staples Center. Record attendance at the StaplesCenter was when 20,193 people attended WrestleMania 21 on April 3, 2005.

Various historical events have happened at Staples Center. On March 22, 2004, Luc Robitaille scored his 1,370th NHL point, making him the highest-scoring left winger in the history of the NHL. The NBA All-Star game was at Staples Center in 2004 and Staples Center also hosted the 2002 NHL All-Star game. The Los Angeles Lakers won three consecutive NBA titles since they began playing in Staples Center.

When Staples Center was created, the goal was to produce an entertainment complex with not only the Los Angeles Clippers, Los Angeles Kings, and Los Angeles Lakers in mind. The idea was to build a year-round destination to be utilized by the community. Staples Center prides itself on having taken some of the best features from other arenas around the country and improving on them. Sometimes viewed as a "city within a city," Staples Center offers something for everyone.
