RBC Center Stadium

When the National Hockey League moved the Hartford Whalers out of Connecticut and into North Carolina to become the Carolina Hurricanes, the team needed a place to call home. The RBC Center in Raleigh was built for the purpose of hosting Carolina Hurricane games as well as providing a place for various kinds of entertainment.

Ground broke on RBC Center on July 2, 1997. The $158 million project was completed by October 1999. With a capacity of 21,500 and measuring in at 700,000 square feet, RBC Center is noted as one of the premier places for entertainment in the Southeast. When the Royal Bank of Canada purchased Centura Bank in 2002, it became RBC Centura. Then RBC Centura paid $4 million a year for 20 years for naming rights to RBC Center. Prior to the deal by RBC Centura Banks, RBC Center was known as the Raleigh Entertainment and Sports Arena.

In addition to hosting Carolina Hurricanes games, North Carolina State men's college basketball team calls RBC Center home. RBC Center seats 19,722 for basketball and 18,762 for hockey. An estimated 1.7 million people visit RBC Center for the 170 events that RBC Center hosts each year.

The first event at RBC Center was an NHL game on October 29, 1999, when the Carolina Hurricanes hosted the New Jersey Devils. Various events have occurred at RBC Center since it opened. WWE SummerSlam 2000 was held at RBC Center, one of the WWE's most popular events. Also, the Carolina Hurricanes hosted some of the games of the 2002 Stanley Cup Finals Playoff series. In 2004, RBC Center hosted the NHL Draft.
