Wachovia Center Stadium

The Wachovia Center in Philadelphia is home to the Philadelphia Flyers of the National Hockey League and the Philadelphia 76ers of the National Basketball Association. The Wachovia Center is part of the Wachovia Complex, which also includes the Wachovia Spectrum. With the various events that it hosts every year, the Wachovia Complex has something for everyone.

When it was completed in 1996, the cost of the Wachovia Center was $206 million. Most of the cost was largely privately financed with assistance from the city and state. Ellerbe Becket was responsible for the architecture. In addition to the Wachovia Center, Ellerbe Becket is responsible for the architecture of over 25 arenas in the United States, including the Savvis Center in St. Louis and the MCI Center in Washington, D.C.

Prior to being called the Wachovia Center, the building was known as CoreStates Center. When the Wachovia Center was known as the First Union Bank Center, it was affectionately referred to as the "F.U. Center" by many Philadelphians.

Wachovia Complex features over 330 events a year and hosts almost three million guests each year. The Wachovia Complex is also home to the Philadelphia Phantoms, KiXX indoor soccer, and Villanova college basketball, to name a few. Other non-sporting events each year at the Wachovia Complex include Ringing Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus, Disney on Ice, and various other popular events and concerts. The Wachovia Center seats 21,600 for basketball and has a capacity crowd of 19,159 for hockey.

The first official event held at the Wachovia Center was a World Cup of hockey game when the United States played Canada on August 31, 1996. Other events at the Wachovia Center include the 2000 Republican National Convention and WrestleMania XV in 1999.
