In 1982, the Colorado Rockies (not to be confused with the Colorado Rockies Major League Baseball team) of the NHL became the New Jersey Devils after relocating to the Meadowlands. Continental Airlines Arena has also been referred to as Meadowlands Arena. In 1996, Continental Airlines paid $29 million for 12-year naming rights.

Since it first opened, Continental Airlines Arena has received various awards including "Prime Site Award" from Facilities and Event Management magazine, a record eight-time "Arena of the Year" by Performance magazine, and was the "No. 1 Grossing Arena in North America" by Amusement Business in 1999.
