Verizon Center Stadium

The Washington Wizards of the National Basketball Association and the Washington Capitals of the National Hockey League call the MCI Center home. In addition to hosting NBA and NHL games, the MCI Center is also home to the Georgetown University men's basketball team and the Washington Mystics of the WNBA. Located in downtown Washington, D.C., the MCI Center hosts more then 220 events annually.

Ground broke on the MCI Center in 1995, and the MCI Center opened on December 2, 1997. The MCI Center is located above the Gallery Place Metro Station and near the National Mall. The $260 million entertainment center is used for a variety of concerts and special events. The MCI Center was one of the first arenas to feature some selected seats with TV screens mounted on the seatback to allow fans to call up instant replays and participate in surveys.

The first NHL game played at MCI Center was December 5, 1997, when the Washington Capitals hosted the Florida Panthers. For hockey, the MCI Center seats 18,756 and 19,700 for basketball. The MCI Center hosts more than 220 cultural, sporting, and entertainment events each year.

Washington Sports & Entertainment, which owns the Washington Capitals and Washington Wizards, currently also owns the arena. The land that the MCI Center is on is leased by the city of Washington. At the end of the 30-year lease, the land is going to be owned by the city once again.

Even though MCI purchased the naming rights for an undisclosed amount, if Verizon merges with MCI, the name of MCI Center could possibly be changed to Verizon Center or Verizon Arena beginning in the 2006-07 NBA and NHL season.
