General Motors Place Stadium

General Motors Place in Vancouver, British Columbia, is sometimes referred to as "GM Place" or "The Garage." The Vancouver Canucks of the National Hockey League call General Motors Place home. Prior to their move to Memphis, the Vancouver Grizzlies of the National Basketball Association also played their home games in General Motors Place.

General Motors Place was completed in 1995 and cost $125 million. One hundred percent of the cost of constructing General Motors Place was privately financed. General Motors Place was the first arena to be completely privately financed since Toronto's Maple Leaf Gardens in 1931.

General Motors of Canada paid $18.5 million for naming rights for 20 years. In November of 2004, John McCaw, the previous owner of the Vancouver Canucks, signed a deal with Francesco Aquilini, head of Aquilini Inventment Group in Vancouver, to give half of his ownership rights to Aquilini.

While seating for hockey in General Motors Place is 19,056, General Motors Place can be partitioned into seating for concerts ranging from 3,500 to 20,000 seats. In addition to basketball, hockey, and concerts, General Motors Place can be configured for a variety of other sporting events and shows. General Motors Place attracts 170 annually. Since it first opened, General Motors Place has hosted more than 10 million visitors.
