The Kiel Center first opened in 1994 and replaced Kiel Auditorium. Prior to moving into the Kiel Center, the National Hockey League's St. Louis Blues played in the St. Louis Arena. The Kiel Center became the Savvis Center after naming rights were sold in August 2000 to SAVVIS Communications Corporation. And it changed again in 2006 when Scottrade took over naming rights for a "long-term and significant" deal, thus making the new name Scottrade Center.

Resting on the former site of the Kiel Auditorium, the Scottrade Center was built in 1994. Construction of the Scottrade Center was $170 million. The Scottrade Center was designed by architect and engineer Ellerbe Becket. An additional $34.5 million was funded by the city of St. Louis to a new adjacent parking facility.

Even though the St. Louis Scottrade Center is used primarily by the St. Louis Blues, Saint Louis University men's basketball and the St. Louis Seamers of the Major Indoor Soccer League both use the Scottrade Center. Approximately 175 events and 2 million people pass through the Scottrade Center each year.

The 665,000-square-foot Scottrade Center features five levels approximately 12 stories tall. Over 21,000 people can fit into the Scottrade Center for hockey games and over 22,000 for basketball. A variety of seating configurations allows for the possibility of the Scottrade Center to be used for multiple events on the same day.

Throughout the 80s and 90s, the St. Louis Blues were the only NHL team to make the NHL Playoffs every season. The St. Louis Blues have only missed the NHL Playoffs four times since they began in 1967. While the St. Louis Blues hope to keep brining the Stanley Cup Playoffs to the Scottrade Center, there are other events already scheduled to be held at the Scottrade Center. The 2006 State Farm U.S. Figure Staking Championships and the 2007 Frozen Four are tentatively scheduled to be hosted at the Scottrade Center.
