Construction first began on the United Center in April of 1992. Chicago Blackhawks owner Bill Wirtz and Chicago Bulls owner Jerry Reinsdorf came up with the idea to build a new arena. Chicago Stadium, the predecessor to the United Center, was demolished in 1995 after the Chicago Blackhawks and the Chicago Bulls moved out. Located just west of the Chicago Loop, the United Center has been recognized as one of the largest stadiums in the United States in terms of physical size, not capacity.

Construction on the United Center began in April of 1992. Cost of construction of the United Center was $175 million. Ownership of the United Center is credited to the United Center Joint Venture. United Airlines pays an estimated $1.8 million dollars annually for 20-year naming rights. HOK Sports was responsible for the architecture, and Huber, Hunt & Nichols were the general contractors and construction managers.

A capacity crowd of 20,500 fans fill the United Center for hockey. For Chicago Bulls and basketball fans, the United Center holds up to 21,500 and up to 23,500 people for concerts and other forms of entertainment.

The United Center hosts over 200 events every year and has attracted over 20 million visitors since opening in 1994. Other past sporting events include the Big Ten Men's Basketball Tournament and the Men's NCAA Basketball Tournament. Musicals acts have included Eric Clapton, Bruce Springsteen, and U2. The Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus also passes through the United Center each year, and various Disney on Ice events are showcased at the United Center.

Many historical events have happened in the United Center. The Chicago Bulls have hosted and won three consecutive NBA titles in 1996, 1997, and 1998. The 1996 Democratic National Convention was held at the United Center. In the first season of playing in the United Center, in 1994-95, the Chicago Blackhawks became the first NHL team to average over 20,000 fans per game.
