Pepsi Center

The Colorado Avalanche of the National Hockey League, the Denver Nuggets of the National Basketball Association, and the Arena Football League's Colorado Crush all call the Pepsi Center home. Not to be confused with Pepsi Arena in Albany, New York, the Pepsi Center is located in downtown Denver.

When the Quebec Nordiques were relocated to Colorado and became the Colorado Avalanche in the 1995-96 season, the Colorado Avalanche first played in McNichols Sports Arena. When the Colorado Avalanche moved to the Pepsi Center in 1999, McNichols Sports Arena was torn down. Pepsi paid an estimated $68 million for promotional sponsorship and naming rights of the Pepsi Center.

The Pepsi Center was completed in October 1999. Construction cost $160 million. Unlike many other professional sports teams that asked taxpayers to underwrite stadiums and arenas, Ascent Entertainment built their own facility. Ascent made a deal with the Colorado Avalanche and the Denver Nuggets to keep both teams in Denver and in the Pepsi Center for 25 years.

Over 220 events are held at Pepsi Center each year. With various options of setting up the stage and seating, Pepsi Center can seat between 15,000 and 20,000 audience members. Hockey games seat 18,129 people while basketball games fit 19,100 spectators.

The first NHL game at the Pepsi Center was between the Colorado Avalanche and the visiting Boston Bruins on October 13, 1999. In 2001, the NHL All Star Game was played at the Pepsi Arena. The first Stanley Cup playoffs by the Colorado Avalanche took place at the McNichols Sports Arena in 1996, and were also the first time the Colorado Avalanche won the Stanley Cup. Five years later, the Colorado Avalanche would return to the Stanley Cup Finals and secure their second Stanley Cup, and first Stanley Cup victory on the ice of the Pepsi Center.

The Pepsi Center is scheduled to host the NCCA men's hockey Frozen Four in 2008.
