Mellon Arena Stadium

Mellon Arena in Pittsburgh is home to the Pittsburgh Penguins of the National Hockey League and the Pittsburgh Xplosion of the American Basketball League. Prior to being known as Mellon Arena, Mellon Arena was known as Civic Arena and was commonly referred to by Pittsburgh Penguins fans as "the Igloo."

The oldest arena in the NHL, Mellon Arena was completed in 1961 and cost $22 million. Mellon Arena was originally intended to be used by the Civic Light Opera, but has since been transformed into the home of various sports teams in Pittsburgh as well as the host of various events that pass through Pittsburgh. The Civic Light Opera moved to another location seven years later.

Mellon Arena featured one of the first retracting domes, which is also one of the largest retractable stainless steel roofs in the world. Each section of the roof is powered by five motors, and can open completely in just under three minutes. Additional seating levels were added in 1975 and 1993 to bring the capacity up from 12,000 to just over 17,000 when the final addition was made.

In addition to featuring hockey and basketball games, Mellon Arena has also hosted various performers that have passed through Pittsburgh. Disney on Ice, the Harlem Globetrotters, and Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus are just some of the family-based events that have been at Mellon Arena.

The first NHL game at Mellon Arena featured the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Montreal Canadiens on October 11, 1967. In 1991 and 1992, the Pittsburgh Penguins reached the Stanley Cup Finals. While the Pittsburgh Penguins hosted some Stanley Cup Finals games during those series, both of the Stanley Cup clinching games were played away from Mellon Arena.
