Pengrowth Saddledome Stadium

Pengrowth Saddledome in Calgary, Alberta, is situated on the east end of the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede grounds. The Calgary Flames of the National Hockey League, the Calgary Hitmen of the Western Hockey League, and the Calgary Roughnecks of the National Lacrosse League all call the Pengrowth Saddledome home.

Pengrowth Saddledome is commonly referred to as the Saddledome or even just as "the Dome." The distinctive shape of the roof of Pengrowth Saddledome is an inverted hyperbolic paraboloid. Depending on what Pengrowth Stadium is being utilized for at the time, it can fit up for 20,100 spectators.

At a cost of $70 million Canadian, Pengrowth Saddledome was contracted by CANA Construction and engineered by Jan Bobrowski and Partners. Graham McCourt Architects was responsible for the architecture. Pengrowth Management Ltd. took over sponsorship in 2000.

Prior to the Pengrowth Saddledome, sporting events in Calgary took place in the Stampede Corral. Upon its completion in 1983, it was going to be used in the 1988 Olympics for indoor ice events. The Saddledome was the first major arena in North America that could host ice hockey games on a standard international-size sheet of ice.

The first NHL game at Pengrowth Saddledome was on October 15, 1983 between the Calgary Flames and the Edmonton Oilers. In 1989, the Calgary Flames won a Stanley Cup. The Pengrowth Saddledome also held the Stanley Cup Finals in the 2003-04 season. Pengrowth Saddledome has also hosted various events in its over 20 years of history including basketball, monster truck events, pro wrestling, rodeo, concerts such as U2, and Wheel of Fortune.
