The Houston Texans may not have won a championship, but when they play at home in Reliant Stadium, they really can blow the roof of the place. Reliant Stadium, based in Houston, Texas, is the first stadium in the NFL to have a retractable roof. A Teflon-coated fiberglass fabric roof consists of two large panels that meet and part at the 50 yard line. Reliant Stadium's roof can open or close in about 10 minutes to adapt to possible threats of inclement weather. The panels slide on tracks and sit above the end zones. And because Reliant Stadium's roof is highly translucent, it lets about 25 percent of the light shine through. To further promote an outdoor feel, half the stadium is constructed of glass and the field is grass. Reliant Stadium uses a tray system to easily replace worn out grass.

Opened on August 24, 2002, Reliant Stadium is home to the 2002 expansion team the Houston Texans and the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. The joint efforts of the largest Rodeo in the world and Houston Texans owner Bob McNair were instrumental in getting Reliant Stadium constructed. At a cost of $449 million, Reliant Stadium has a seating capacity of 69,500. It includes 166 suites and 7,700 club seats. The first row of seats in Reliant Stadium is said to be one of the closest to the field of any NFL stadium.

Reliant Stadium served as the host facility to Super Bowl XXXVIII on February 1, 2004. However, the racy halftime show featuring Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake's famous "wardrobe malfunction" overshadowed most aspects of the game. Reliant Stadium also hosted a historic tribute concert to the late pop star Selena featuring celebrity performers such as Gloria Estefan, Thalia, Paulina Rubio, and Ana Gabriel. Reliant Stadium also regularly hosts events such as Monster Jam and Disney on Ice. In 2005, the 32nd annual State Farm Bayou Classic, a Southwestern Athletic Conference college football tradition, was relocated to Reliant Stadium from New Orleans following the damage of Hurricane Katrina, while at the same time the neighboring Reliant Astrodome housed displaced victims of the disaster.

The Reliant Park complex includes Reliant Arena, Reliant Astrodome, Reliant Center, and Reliant Stadium. Reliant Energy paid $300 million to purchase naming rights to the entire complex for 32 years. Though Reliant Stadium's owner, Harris County, frowned on tailgating when the Oilers played in Houston, it is now actively encouraged. A few hours before each Houston Texans home game, Texans Cheerleaders and the Texans Band often entertain in the parking lot as well as in Bud Plaza, a gated section on the south end of the of the stadium.
