Oakland Raiders | McAFee Coliseum Tickets |

McAfee Coliseum in Oakland, Calif., is home to both the National Football League's Oakland Raiders and Major League Baseball's Oakland Athletics. When it opened in 1966, McAfee Coliseum, then known as Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum, was originally built more as a baseball stadium with adaptations made for Oakland Raiders football games. Oakland wanted to lure an MLB franchise to town and the Oakland Athletics opened at McAfee Coliseum in 1968. McAfee Coliseum features a grass playing surface that is actually below ground level so fans enter on the upper deck level.
McAfee Coliseum hosted the Oakland Athletics in three-straight World Series Championships beginning in 1972. In 1982, the Oakland Raiders moved to Los Angeles to play in a larger stadium while the Oakland Athletics continued to make a name for the franchise in Oakland. The Oakland Athletics played three more World Series at McAfee Coliseum beginning in 1988. In 1987, the Coliseum hosted the MLB All Star Game. McAfee Coliseum has also hosted a range of events including Gwen Stefani, Coldplay, the Eagles, U2, Lou Jones Silver Bowl, 30th Annual World Championship ICE Racing Series, Pete Newell Challenge, Disney on Ice, and Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus.
The Raiders returned to Oakland in 1996 after McAfee Coliseum underwent extensive renovations which made it a stronger football facility. Two 40,000-square-foot clubs were added. The Coliseum removed all of the outfield bleachers and replaced them with a four-tier grandstand that includes 125 luxury suites. Originally seating 45,000, McAfee Coliseum now seats 48,219 for baseball and 63,026 for football. As a baseball field, McAfee Coliseum has more space between the foul lines and the seats than any other major league ballpark, especially near first base and third base. Thus, many balls that would reach the seats in other ballparks are caught for outs at McAfee Coliseum. McAfee Coliseum's $200-million renovation costs dwarfed the original $25-million dollar construction cost.
In 1998 Network Associates paid $5.8 million over five years for the naming rights. The stadium became known as Network Associates Coliseum, or sometimes "The Net." After renewing the contract for $6 million, Network Associates was renamed McAfee and McAfee Coliseum became the facility's new name. Locals generally refer to it as "The Coliseum." McAfee Coliseum is located at 7000 Coliseum Way.
McAfee Coliseum's football vs. baseball tug of war seems to be entering a new round. On August 12, 2005, the Oakland Athletics' new owner Lewis Wolff proposed the Athletics first official plan for a new ballpark in Oakland.
