Ford Field

Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan, is home to the Detroit Lions of the National Football League. When the lease ran out at the Silverdome, the Detroit Lions needed a new place to call home and wanted to return to Detroit after playing in suburban Detroit for over two decades.

Ground first broke on Ford Field in 1999 and it opened in August of 2002. Ford Field was built next to Comerica Park, the home of the Detroit Tigers of Major League Baseball. Funding for the $300 million Ford Field was through public funding such as the city of Detroit, and private funding by way of Ford Motor Company, among others. Ford also paid $40 million over 20 years for naming rights.

The 65,000-seat indoor stadium can be expanded to 70,000 for football events such as the Super Bowl. Featured on the field is a FieldTurf surface, which is made from recalled Firestone tires. FieldTurf is used in areas where natural grass is not feasible. Similar to AstroTruf, FieldTurf is very similar to natural grass that can be used in more than just athletic fields.

With 800 accessible and companion seats available and wheelchair accessible seating available in suites and the club level, Ford Field provides plenty of seating for those who are in need of special access. Those who need ambulatory seating are provided with wheelchair assistance to and from the gate and their seat in the lower level seating areas. Wheelchairs will not be available throughout the game.

The first football game at Ford Field was a matchup between the Detroit Lions and the Pittsburgh Steelers on August 24, 2002. On December 13, 2003, the largest crowd to ever attend a basketball game filled Ford Field when 79,129 people watched Kentucky defeat Michigan State 79-74. The Motor City Bowl of college football is hosted annually at Ford Field. Other events set to be hosted at Ford Field include Super Bowl XL on February 5, 2006, the 2009 Final Four, and the 2010 Frozen Four.
