New York Jets | Meadowlands Tickets |

No one could have foreseen Giants Stadium's replacement would cost more than $1 billion when the $78-milllion dollar facility was built in 1976. Home to National Football League (NFL) franchises the New York Giants and the New York Jets as well as the Major League Soccer's (MLS) MetroStars, Giants Stadium is located at 50 State Hwy. 120, in East Rutherford, N.J. Giants Stadium is part of the Meadowlands Sports Complex which includes Meadowlands Racetrack and Continental Airlines Arena. It seats 80,242 and features a FieldTurf playing surface. Since their move in 1984, the New York Jets refer to Giants Stadium as "The Meadowlands" because the stadium is named for another NFL team. The blue stadium matches the New York Giants' team colors. When the New York Jets play, Giants Stadium crews cover the walls with green banners and repaint the end zones green with Jets Logos.
Giants Stadium's rich history includes three other professional football teams that have called it home in the past including the New Jersey Generals of the United States Football League, the New York/New Jersey Knights of the World League of American Football, and the XFL's New York/New Jersey Hitmen. The New York Cosmos of the North American Soccer League played at Giants Stadium until the league folded in 1985.
Soccer legend Pele played his last game on October 1, 1977, at Giants Stadium. Yet when Pope John Paul II celebrated Mass during a rainstorm on October 5, 1995, he drew the largest crowd to ever attend an event at Giants Stadium which drew 82,948 people.
Nine games of the 1994 World Cup soccer tournament were played at Giants Stadium, as were several games of the 1999 Women's World Cup. Giants Stadium hosted many matches of the CONCACAF Gold Cup including the final in which the USA defeated Panama. The stadium has also hosted numerous college football games, including the Kickoff Classic, the New York Urban League Classic and several Army/Navy games. The list of concerts held at Giants Stadium is as impressive as its sports history. Bruce Springsteen, the Grateful Dead, Green Day and the Three Tenors are but a few the performers who entertained masses of fans at Giants Stadium.
New Stadium Plans Are No Small Endeavor
Plans for a new joint-team stadium are in the works. Scheduled to open in 2009, the new stadium will sit between meadowlands race track and the existing Giants Stadium. It may include a retractable roof, an atrium consisting of a Football Hall of Fame, team stores for the Jets and Giants, football-themed dining, and conference space. Preliminary plans propose a future retail component south of the stadium that would link it and the $1.3 billion Xanadu retail-entertainment complex. The state of New Jersey will pay for an additional $225 million worth of infrastructure improvements, including building a rail station and paying for road upgrades within the sports complex and on nearby roads. The Giants practice facility will be onsite, while the Jets will locate theirs elsewhere in New Jersey.
