Giants

The New York Giants of the National Football League (NFL) host their home games at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, as do the New York Jets (but the Jets refer to the stadium as The Meadowlands). The MetroStars of Major League Soccer (MLS) also call Giants Stadium home. Giants Stadium is part of the Meadowlands Sports Complex, which also consists of the Meadowlands Racetrack and the Continental Airlines Arena.

Giants Stadium is owned and operated by the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority. Construction of Giants Stadium cost $75 million. Giants Stadium opened October 10, 1976 when the New York Giants hosted the Dallas Cowboys. While 76,042 fans were at the first football game to be played in Giants Stadium, the seating capacity of the stadium is actually 80,242 people, which is the second-largest in the NFL. Included in that number are 119 suites. On a typical game day, Giants Stadium uses enough power to supply energy to approximately 4,000 homes.

Other than the New York Giants, New York Jets, and the MetroStars, other sporting events have taken place at Giants Stadium. Nine games of the 1994 World Cup soccer tournament and several games of the 1999 Women's World Cup were played at Giants Stadium, among other football events. On October 5, 1995, Pope John Paul II celebrated mass in front of a crowd of 82,948, the most attendees ever at a Giants Stadium event . More than 45 million events have been hosted at Giants Stadium since it opened in 1976.

It was announced on September 29, 2005 that Giants Stadium is scheduled to be replaced with a new $800 million stadium in 2009.
