In less than 20 years, Dolphins Stadium, home of the Miami Dolphins has undergone six major changes including the addition of Major League Baseball Franchise the Florida Marlins, four name changes, and a new owner. But Dolphins Stadium by any other name is still a world-class sports entertainment site.
Formerly known as Dolphin Stadium, Joe Robbie Stadium, Pro Player Park, and Pro Player Stadium, the facility was renamed Dolphins Stadium in January 1995 when owner Wayne Huizenga announced a $300 million renovation that would add luxury suites, a retractable dome and additional parking.
Since 1987, Dolphins Stadium has been home to the Miami Dolphins and to the Florida Marlins since 1993. Dolphins Stadium has hosted three NFL Super Bowl Games, these being in 1989, 1995 and 1999. Two more Super Bowl Games are scheduled to invade Dolphins Stadium in 2007 and 2010. The world-champion Florida Marlins played two MLB World Series at this facility, in 1997 and 2003. And the FedEx Orange Bowl has returned every year since 1996. Numerous concerts featuring entertainers such as U2, The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Elton John, Billy Joel, Chicago, Genesis, Gloria Estefan, Guns N' Roses, The Who, Hall & Oates, Rod Stewart, Paul McCartney, and The Three Tenors have also filled Dolphins Stadium. Many commercials and feature films were filmed at Dolphins Stadium as well.
Constructed entirely with private funds, Dolphins Stadium construction cost $300 million. Season ticket holders agreed to long-term commitments in exchange for first class amenities such as a club level and executive suites. Many new facilities have used Dolphins Stadium as a model. It has a seating capacity of 75,000 for football and full baseball seating capacity is 47,662.
The facility underwent $10 million in renovations to prepare for the 1993 baseball season with the inaugural season for the Florida Marlins. The conversion included installing retractable seating on the north side of the stadium, constructing a baseball press box, building the baseball dugouts, adding 660 new lights for night play, and installing a hydraulic disappearing pitcher's mound. The stadium also features a synthetic warning track designed to absorb water. In order to fit a football and baseball field in the same stadium, Dolphin Stadium's field of play is larger than in most other baseball stadiums. Dolphins Stadium's 33-foot tall left field fence also limits the ability of many players to hit home runs. Dolphins Stadium is located at 2269 Dan Marino Blvd.
