RCA Dome

The RCA Dome in Indianapolis, Indiana, underwent a facelift or—a Turflift in May 2005. The RCA Dome, home to the Indianapolis Colts, converted to a FieldTurf artificial playing surface after eight seasons of play on Astro-Turf. Though nothing can replace a natural playing surface, FieldTurf looks and feels like real grass. This RCA Dome improvement will keep the Indianapolis Colts on softer ground until their new home is ready in 2008. The Indianapolis Colts are no strangers to new homes. In 1984 the Baltimore Colts headed west to compete as the Indianapolis Colts in the AFC's South Division. They plan to stay in the neighborhood when the RCA Dome is replaced by a new retractable roof stadium in downtown Indianapolis before the 2008 NFL season.

Built in 1983 the RCA Dome was finished a year before the Colts actually moved to the city from Baltimore, which many considered a gamble. The $77.5 million stadium was built as part of the Indiana Convention Center and is intended for multiple uses. The first basketball game played in the RCA Dome was an exhibition between the NBA All-Star team in 1984 and the United States Olympic Men's Basketball Team. Since then the RCA Dome has hosted concerts, large banquets, religious assemblies, and various sporting events including several NCAA Final Four tournaments and the NBA All-Star Game in February 1985. The RCA Dome hosted its first Women's Final Four in April 2005 and is scheduled to host the next NCAA Men's Final Four on April 1 and April 3 in 2006. WrestleMania VIII and the USAC's Thunder in the Dome Midget Car Racing event have also been held at the RCA Dome.

Originally known as the Hoosier Dome, the RCA Dome was renamed in 1994 when RCA paid $10 million for naming rights lasting 10 years. The rights were renewed for another five years in 2004 with another five-year renewal option available.

The RCA Dome was built with 57,890 permanent seats. An expansion in 2001 raised the stadium seating for the Indianapolis Colts to 60,272. Basketball seating can increase capacity to up to 67,000. The facility includes 104 luxury suites and 5,000 club seats. One of the few remaining inflated roof sports structures the RCA Dome is said to give the Indianapolis Colts a strong noise advantage. The RCA Dome is located at 100 S. Capitol Ave.
