Qualcomm Stadium, a multiple-use stadium in San Diego, Calif., is the home of the NFL's San Diego Chargers and the San Diego State University Aztecs college football team. Every December, Qualcomm Stadium hosts the Holiday Bowl. Until 2003, the facility served as the home of the MLB San Diego Padres. The San Diego Padres now play their home games at Petco Park in downtown San Diego. Qualcomm Stadium has hosted three Super Bowl games including: Super Bowl XXII in 1988, Super Bowl XXXII in 1998, and Super Bowl XXXVII in 2003. The 1978 and 1992 MLB All Star Games were also held at Qualcomm Stadium as were the 1994 and 1998 National League Championship Series and the 1984 and 1998 World Series.

Opened on August 20, 1967, as San Diego Stadium, the facility had a capacity of approximately 53,000 and a grass playing surface. After the death of San Diego Union sports writer Jack Murphy, the facility was renamed Jack Murphy Stadium in 1980. Murphy originally convinced hotel mogul Baron Hilton to move his Chargers football team from Los Angeles to San Diego. Murphy then led the charge to construct a new stadium for the San Diego Chargers.

Frank L. Hope and Associates, the local architect that designed the stadium, had never designed a stadium before. Yet in 1969, San Diego Stadium became the only stadium to win the First Honor Award from the American Institute of Architects. Original construction costs ran $27 million. The three-tier grandstand was in the shape of a horseshoe. In 1984, bleachers added to the lower deck on the open end of the stadium and 50 additional suites raised the seating capacity to nearly 61,000.

In 1997, Qualcomm Corporation paid $18 million for naming rights lasting through 2017. That year, to prepare for Super Bowl XXXII, Qualcomm Stadium expanded its seating capacity to more than 71,000. The stadium was fully enclosed, with the exception of the scoreboard area and the number of suites was increased to 110. Two new video screens and a practice field for the San Diego Chargers finished out the upgrades. Expansion costs reached $78 million. Qualcomm Stadium is one of the oldest stadiums in the NFL. By modern standards, according to some people, most seats in this facility may be distant from the action on the field

Qualcomm Stadium is built to accommodate a wide variety of events ranging from football, concerts, soccer matches, super-cross motorcycle races, and off-road extravaganzas. The stadium parking lot accommodates such events as circuses, auto racing, and car and RV shows. Qualcomm Stadium is located in the heart of San Diego in Mission Valley at 9449 Friars Rd.
