After biding their time at Sun Devil Stadium since 1988, the Arizona Cardinals have their own stadium. University of Phoenix Stadium first broke ground in 2003 and was completed by August 2006. Located across the street from Jobing.com Arena, home of the Phoenix Coyotes, University of Phoenix Stadium seats 63,000 people, but is expandable to 73,000 seats.

University of Phoenix Stadium cost $355 million to complete. The facility features a retractable natural grass playing surface, the first of its kind in the United States. One side of the building can be opened to allow the playing field to be moved and exposed to sunlight when it is not being used.

Every seat at University of Phoenix Stadium has armrests and seatbacks, unlike at Sun Devil Stadium, which only had 6,000 such seats available to Arizona Cardinals fans. In addition, each of those seats at University of Phoenix Stadium will have an Arizona Cardinals birdhead on the back and side of each chair.

The surrounding plaza is named Pat Tillman Freedom Plaza in honor of the former Arizona Cardinals defensive back that lost his life while serving in the United States Army in Afghanistan.

University of Phoenix Stadium, which was so named due to a $154.5 million naming rights agreement, also hosts the annual Fiesta Bowl and the will host the BCS National Championship Game every four years. University of Phoenix Stadium is also expected to host Super Bowl XLII in 2008.
