Raymond James

Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida, hosts the home games of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers of the National Football League. The Tampa Bay Mutiny of Major League Soccer used to call Raymond James Stadium home until the franchise folded in 2001. The South Florida Bulls college football team also plays their home games at Raymond James Stadium. College football's annual Outback Bowl is also played at Raymond James Stadium.

Originally referred to as the Tampa Community Stadium, naming rights were purchased by St. Petersburg Time-based financial services company Raymond James at $32.5 million for 13 years. The $168 million construction cost was primarily publicly financed. Raymond James Stadium opened in September 1998.

Only a few hundred yards away from Houlihan's Stadium, the first home of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Raymond James Stadium was a major upgrade. Instead of bench seating, Raymond James Stadium offers spectators individual seats. In addition, there are also 712 wheelchair-accessible seats located at various places throughout the stadium. Often referred to as the crown jewel of NFL stadiums by some of the NFL insiders, Raymond James Stadium also offers some of the most advanced video board technology in the NFL. Two scoreboards, one in each end zone, are capable of displaying replays and up to six different images at once. The video boards can be seen from anywhere in the stadium.

One of the recognizable features of Raymond James Stadium is the 103-foot, 43-ton steel and concrete replica pirate ship that fires confetti and soft-rubber footballs every time the Tampa Bay Buccaneers score points.

The first NFL game at Raymond James Stadium was on September 20, 1998, when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers hosted the Chicago Bears. When Raymond James Stadium hosted Super Bowl XXXV on January 28, 2001, a record crowd of 71,921 filled the stadium thanks in part to temporary bleachers that were erected in both end zones. Regular NFL capacity stands at 65,647 people. Raymond James is also scheduled to host Super Bowl XLIII in 2009.
