Monster Park

Located in the San Francisco Bay area of California, Monster Park is home to the San Francisco 49ers of the National Football League. Major League Baseball's San Francisco Giants used to call Monster Park home, before they moved to SBC Park. Originally named Candlestick Park, it is often called "The Stick."

Construction of Monster Park began in 1958, and it opened in 1960. Original cost of construction was $24.6 million, which was completely publicly financed. The city of San Francisco owns and operates Monster Park. The first NFL game was played in the 1971 season when the San Francisco 49ers hosted the Los Angeles Rams on October 10.

When it first opened, Monster Park had a capacity of about 45,000 seats. In 1971, $1.6 million went into improving the stadium and making it multi purpose and the seating capacity was increased to 59,000. Current capacity stands at 64,450. Since the most recent renovation, not much has changed at Monster Park other than the natural grass playing field, which replaced the AstroTurf in 1979.

Candlestick Park was named 3 Com Park in 1995 after 3 Com bought naming rights. After briefly being called Candlestick Park once again, Monster Cable purchased four-year naming rights to Candlestick Park in 2004. It was recently decided that after the naming rights run out in 2008, Monster Park will revert back to the original name of Candlestick Park. Many still refer to Monster Park as Candlestick Park.

Various events have occurred in the history of Monster Park. The Beatles performed their last live commercial concert at Monster Park on August 29, 1966. Minor damage to the stadium was sustained during the Loma Prieta earthquake of 1989. The earthquake put the World Series between the San Francisco Giants and the Oakland Athletics on hold for 10 days.

Throughout its history, Monster Park has hosted six NFC Championship Games, 12 NFC West Conference Games, three Western Division Championships, two All-Star games and two World Series. Monster Park is the last remaining NFL stadium that started out as a baseball stadium.
