After joining the NFL as an expansion team along with the Carolina Panthers in 1995, the Jacksonville Jaguars missed the NFL Playoffs in their inaugural season but made the NFL Playoffs the following four seasons. The Jacksonville Jaguars made it to the NFL Playoffs from 1996 until 1999, but are yet to return to the NFL Playoffs. Going into the 2005 NFL season, the Jacksonville Jaguars are one of four teams, including the New Orleans Saints, the Seattle Seahawks, and Houston Texans, that have never played in an NFL Championship or Super Bowl game.
Having posted only four seasons with a winning record in the previous nine seasons, the Jacksonville Jaguars posted a record of 9-7 in 2004. However, a loss to the Houston Texans late in the season cost the Jacksonville Jaguars an NFL Playoff appearance as they finished second in the AFC South Division and missed an AFC Wild Card position. Had the Jacksonville Jaguars made the NFL Playoffs in 2004 and won their way to the Super Bowl, they would have not only played in their first-ever Super Bowl, but they could have played in the first Super Bowl on home turf as the Jacksonville Jaguars hosted the 2005 Super Bowl at Alltel Stadium.
As the 2005 NFL season comes to a close, the Jacksonville Jaguars might not find themselves in contention for the AFC South title as the Indianapolis Colts seem to be running away with the title after dominating most of the season. With the AFC South title out of the picture, the Jacksonville Jaguars have their eyes on an AFC Wild Card spot along with the Cincinnati Bengals and Pittsburgh Steelers.
