Last year did feature a lot of trials by fire, and Franchione and the College Station faithful are hoping that the year of suffering paid off. Reggie McNeal is as an athletic quarterback as you'll find in the country, but he couldn't quite put it together while dealing with a shoulder injury. If he doesn't show signs of improvement, that will be a surprise and a disappointment. Sophomore Courtney Lewis joins him in the backfield, hoping to follow up his 1,024-yard, 12-touchdown season with bigger numbers. McNeal needs to get the ball to Terrence Murphy, who is faster than anybody on the field. Earvin Taylor will be on the opposite side of the field, and his 6-3 frame is another inviting target. The defense suffered the same problems as the offense, as both sides of the ball were equally to blame for the 4-8 record. The defensive line returns intact, which could be a good thing or a bad thing. Experience is always good, but they couldn't manage to stop the pass or run. Mike Montgomery is a physical prototype for a defensive end at 6-foot-6-inch and 278 pounds, but he only managed one sack. He'll need to step up, and that goes to the rest of his linemates as well. Free safety Jaxson Appel is the star of this defense. With JUCO transfers all around, he'll be the rock of the secondary, and he could contend for a spot on the All-Big 12 team as well. |
