The Southeastern Conference was ridiculously stacked last year. Co-National Champion LSU, Ole Miss, Georgia, Tennessee and Florida beat each other up, and all the schools landed major bowl bids. This year should be no different, except maybe even a little more competitive. LSU returns mostly intact, with Marcus Randall replacing Matt Mauck at quarterback, and should have a dominating defense. SEC West rival Auburn, after a disappointing 8-5 season that came up short of the championship predictions, returns a year older and a year smarter. A bowl bid in 2003 should only whet Arkansas' appetite, as Houston Nutt has visions of first place. A full year of Brodie Croyle should help Alabama rebound from its first nine-loss season since the 1950s, and Mississippi State will be a team to watch under Sylvester Croom, who is the conference's first black head coach. Things are equally interesting in the East, where Georgia enters the season as the favorite, thanks to the senior leadership of David Greene on offense and David Pollack on defense. They'll be challenged by Tennessee, and while Phillip Fulmer's squad is going through a young phase, his teams can't be counted out. Florida is poised to make a big run this year, something Ron Zook desperately needs to gain the support of his fans. Chris Leak should make plenty of highlight reels at quarterback. The SEC will be as intense as ever, as it's a conference where every team is a rival of another.
