However, it may also be a year of reloading. The Buckeyes' skill players shone on-and-off throughout 2003, but they'll need to put it together in order for the Buckeyes to win the Big Ten. Ohio State lost a tremendous leader in Craig Krenzel, and now Justin Zwick will attempt to fill in his shoes at quarterback. He's a lot more talented than Krenzel, but it remains to be seen if he has the knack for showing up when it counts. Behind him is Lydell Ross, who didn't exactly make people forget Maurice Clarett last year, but still was productive. If he stays healthy, he'll be one of the conference's top rushers. Michael Jenkins is gone, which means Santonio Holmes will have to make the transition from No. 2 to No. 1 receiver. The strength of the defense lies in its linebacking corps. With Anthony Schlegel finally transferred from the Air Force, he'll give the Buckeyes a force in the middle. The two he's surrounded by aren't slouches either, as Bobby Carpenter and A.J. Hawk have been able to get in the backfield as well as stop the run. Without Chris Gamble, the secondary looks a little ripe for the picking, but Jim Tressel should be able to make this group bend but not break. Dustin Fox and E.J. Underwood are coming off injuries, and they can be productive if they can stay healthy. The glue is Nate Salley, who makes big plays and big hits. |
