Had it not been for an upset at home in 2003, the Tigers would own the title of National Champions, instead of sharing it with USC. LSU returns in 2004 looking a little different, but nevertheless, they will be among the elite teams contending for the title.

However, the schedule for LSU appears to be considerably on tougher. The Tigers will take on Auburn, Arkansas and Georgia on the road, and they have to play the Florida Gators in Gainesville as well, where they hope to avenge the 19-7 loss in Baton Rouge that cost LSU a chance for an undefeated season.

The Tigers will also have to deal with losing two of its top offensive players - quarterback Matt Mauck and wide receiver Mark Clayton. Marcus Randall and JaMarcus Russell with split time behind center, but running back Justin Vincent should help ease the transition a lot. He is expected to be one of the best backs in the nation.

While the offense may scuffle at times, the defense should have no problem carrying the load. The Tigers are strong in every facet - Marcus Spears and Kyle Williams will be in the backfield on seemingly every play, Lionel Turner, Cameron Vaughn and Ali Highsmith could be one of the best linebacker combos in the nation, and Corey Webster anchors arguably college football's best secondary. Points will be tough to come by against the LSU "D."
