With one school on the rise and another school on the decline, the 2004 Gator Bowl could be a milestone, for better or for worse. West Virginia flirted with true greatness for the first time in recent history, while an inconsistent offense plagued Florida State for the second straight year. This game is more meaningful to these two schools than the average Gator Bowl.

West Virginia cracked the Top 10 after winning eight of its first nine games, but faltered down the stretch with tough losses against Boston College and Pittsburgh, spoiling their bid for a BCS contest at the Fiesta Bowl. A win at the Gator Bowl would mean a lot for the Mountaineers - they haven't won a bowl game since 2000. If the Mountaineers, led by a rushing attack featuring Rasheed Marshall and Kay-Jay Harris, can win the Gator Bowl, it would be a definite boost to a team that has lacked consistency despite impressive win totals.

The Florida State Seminoles, on the other hand, need a Gator Bowl victory, lest they lose their "football factory" image. Their season got off on the wrong foot thanks to Hurricanes. Hurricane Francis delayed their first game a week, and then the Miami Hurricanes defeated Florida State in overtime to start the year. FSU lost a 10-point lead in the last quarter, and their losing streak against Miami extended to six games. Combine that with underwhelming performances against Maryland and Florida, and the Seminoles could not only be battling the Mountaineers in the Gator Bowl, but relevancy as well. Bobby Bowden is relying on Chris Rix and Wyatt Sexton to give his team some much-needed offense.
