They went 5-7, enduring a three-game losing streak and a four-game losing streak, which is underachieving for a team with a NFL-caliber quarterback. Coach Dirk Koetter is under pressure to get the job done this year, and there's no reason to think this team can't win at least eight games. Senior quarterback Andrew Walter is back to improve on his 3,044-yard, 24-touchdown 2003 season in which he played most of it with an ankle injury. He and junior wideout Derek Hagan should prove to be one of the NCAA's top connections. Hagan is tall (6'2"), and lightning-quick, which bodes well for Walter's cannon arm. The offense should be complimented by a more productive defense. The secondary, a liability last year, should be the defense's cornerstone. Cornerback R.J. Oliver and safety Riccardo Stewart are two seniors looking to end their career with a bang, and anything less than an All-Pack 10 Team selection would be a disappointment for either of them. The Sun Devils will be adjusting to a 4-3 defense. Last year, they played a 4-2-5 and allowed over 30 points in seven games. Matt Fawley will be the player to watch in this new scheme - the safety will move to the weakside linebacker position, now called the "Devil" position. |
