Eight teams on the western coast of the United States, from Canada down to Mexico, make up the West Coast Conference. The current eight-team format began in 1979; only the Ivy League and Pac-10 have lasted longer. Gonzaga was chosen in the preseason West Coast Conference to win their seventh consecutive title. Gonzaga returns three starters from last season's Sweet 16 squad. Loyola Marymount, San Francisco, Saint Mary's and San Diego round out the Top 5 in the preseason poll, with Santa Clara, Pepperdine, and Portland filling the last three spots. Although Loyola Marymount was chosen by critics in the preseason as the only team in the West Coast with a chance to take Gonzaga out of first place, there are still plenty of talented teams in the West Coast Conference!
