Nebraska Cornhuskers Mens Basketball
The 2003-04 Nebraska Cornhuskers basketball team overachieved to some extent. Nebraska basketball is generally an afterthought, but an 18-13 overall record and a 6-10 conference record were good enough for a spot in the NIT. The Huskers capitalized on this opportunity, scoring small upsets over Creighton and Niagara before losing to Hawaii.
Nebraska lose its top two scorers in Nate Johnson and Andrew Drevo, but an import of international flavor could help offset the deficit. Aleks Maric will create some match-up problems this year. The 6-foot-11-inch Australian can score and rebound, and at 250 pounds, he'll be tough to box out. Freshman Joe McCray and JuCo transfer Marcus Perry are short on Division I experience, but history indicates that they know how to score. It will be up to John Turek to help bring this team together, even though he's playing at the power forward position. With 86 starts, he has the most experience, and Nebraska will need it to help bring in the wide array of talent it has collected.
With a stacked Big 12, the Cornhuskers may have a less-than-stellar conference record, but they look primed to knock off a couple of favorites along the way. Another NIT berth would be another step in the right direction.
