Whenever the BCS talks about having a de facto college football champion, it aspires to have the same credibility as the basketball's NCAA Championship game. Granted, teams may not be No. 1 when they enter the NCAA Tournament, but they are undoubtedly No. 1 if and when they win the NCAA Championship. Any team, regardless of standing prior to March Madness, deserves the title if it can survive six grueling rounds in what is arguably sport's biggest pressure cooker. There may no longer be college basketball powerhouses like UCLA, which won an incredible seven NCAA Championships in a row from 1967 to 1973, or the Duke Blue Devils of the early 1990s, which appeared in four NCAA Championships in five years, winning two. Nevertheless, college basketball never loses that sense of finality, even in times of undeniable parity. The NCAA Championship game has featured 10 different teams in the last five years, adding a sense of excitement with the possibility that anything can happen. March Madness and the NCAA Tournament provide weeks of thrilling basketball, and they deserve to be capped off with authority. The NCAA Championship game just does that.
