Verizon Center Offers Capital Gains

When Verizon Center opened in Washington, DC it brought something to the Washington Wizards that had been lacking excitement. Located in the Chinatown section of downtown Washington DC, Verizon Center is an arena that teams want to play in and fans want to visit. It offers easy access, a clear view, and the seats are close and roomy. Verizon Center is home to the National Basketball Association's (NBA) Washington Wizards. Most recently known as the Washington Bullets, the capital's NBA franchise underwent an additional five names before adopting the Washington Wizards name in 1997.

The Washington Capitals of the National Hockey League (NHL), the Washington Mystics of the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA), and the Georgetown University Hoyas men's basketball team also call Verizon Center home.

Verizon Center's seating capacity of 20,674 seats includes 110 suites and four executive suites, the closest of which is just 19 rows from the playing surface. MCI National Sports Gallery, a sports memorabilia and game arcade, is located upstairs and features interactive sports activities. When it was installed, Verizon Center's 12-foot by 16-foot LED video scoreboard was the largest of its type in any arena. Even the warm colors inside the $260-million dollar Verizon Center are designed to build excitement. High-tech laser lights create a sense of drama whether fans come to Verizon Center to see a game, Bon Jovi, Coldplay, the Harlem Globetrotters, or Monster Jam.

In 1997, President Clinton attended the Washington Wizards opening game at Verizon Center and saw the Washington Wizards beat the Seattle SuperSonics. The night christened Verizon Center's role as "the" downtown entertainment destination. An MCI merger with Verizon may soon bring about a name change for Verizon Center but it won't change the city's embrace of the venue.

Getting There and Getting Around

Verizon Center is located at 601 F Street, NW. It can be accessed via the Red, Yellow and Green lines of the Washington Metro. Metro access is underneath the Verizon Center. Look for metro stations at Gallery Place-Chinatown. A metro stop with elevator access to the street level adjacent to the arena provides disabled guests easy access. Accessible seating is integrated into all levels of the arena. An Accessibility Coordinator visits the accessible seating sections during each event to provide guests who have disabilities with assistance. Braille signage, pictogram menus, and lowered service counters increase access as well. Given advance notice, Verizon Center can provide audio description and sign interpretation. All events offer an FM assistive listening system upon request.
