Target Center

Home to the Minnesota Timberwolves of the National Basketball Association (NBA), the Target Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota, has more to offer than just basketball games. Concerts, family shows, various sporting events, and more have made their way through one of the premier sports and entertainment venues in the Upper Midwest.

It took 27 months at a cost of $104 million to construct Target Center. Financing was from city tax bonds and private debt. Target Center first opened in 1990. Target paid almost $19 million for 15-year naming rights. Target Center is one of two arenas in the country with a movable floor, and was the first major arena in the United States to be a completely non-smoking venue.

Seating stands at 20,500 people for basketball games and anywhere from 13,000 to 19,500 people for concerts. Included in the seating are over 114 wheelchair and accessible seats located on all four levels of the arena. Target Center underwent a major renovation in 2004 that lead to the replacement of all 19,006 of the original seats.

The first NBA game that was played at Target Center featured the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Philadelphia 76ers on October 16, 1990. Over 190 events take place at the arena every year. Disney On Ice, the Harlem Globetrotters, and various concerts take place at Target Center annually.

Getting there and getting around

Target Center is located in downtown Minneapolis, in the Entertainment District. Located on First Avenue North between 6th and 7th Streets, Target Center can be easily accessed from various points. From the north and south it is recommended to take 35W; take 94 West when coming from the East; and take 394 East when coming from the West. There are 11,000 parking spots within three blocks of Target Center and an additional 6,000 spots are attached to Target Center by way of the skyway. Accessible parking is available in the 4th, 5th, and 7th Street parking ramps. All of the parking lots surrounding Target Center have accessible parking.
