Wachovia Center: Any Ball or Puck Will Do
Philadelphia's Wachovia Center is a 300,000-square-ft. arena used for NBA basketball and NHL hockey...and AHL hockey and college basketball. And AFL football and NLL lacrosse. Oh yeah, and ice skating, X-Games and wrestling. It might be easier to list the events that aren't held under Wachovia Center's roof, but there aren't many. "Pollstar" magazine reported that the Wachovia Complex (Wachovia Center and Wachovia Spectrum) in south Philly sold more tickets in 2004 than any other sports facility in the world, not including the sports teams that regularly play at the arenas. Wachovia Center has a seating capacity of 21,600 for basketball and 19,519 for hockey, but the largest crowd it has drawn, 40,000, was for the Republican National Convention in August 2000.
Wachovia Center is home to the three-time National Basketball Association (NBA) Champion Philadelphia 76ers) and the two-time Stanley Cup winning Philadelphia Flyers of the National Hockey League (NHL). Wachovia Center also houses the Philadelphia Wings of the National Lacrosse League who have earned two NLL Championships and four previous Championships. The recently formed Philadelphia Soul of the Arena Football League (AFL) plays Sunday games at Wachovia Center. Scheduling conflicts also bring the Philadelphia Flyers' minor league affiliate the Philadelphia Phantoms of the American Hockey League (AHL) to Wachovia Center. A Ray Charles concert opened Wachovia Center in 1996. Since then, a range of performers including, Garth Brooks, Bruce Springsteen, KISS, Billy Joel, Elton John, and Madonna have graced Wachovia Center. Game 1 of the 1996 World Cup Hockey Finals christened Wachovia Center as its first sporting event. The 1998 U.S. National Ice Skating Championships, 2001 NCAA Tournament, and 2001 X-Games were also held at Wachovia Center.
Formerly known as CoreStates Center, the arena was renamed twice following a series of mergers. Naming rights sold for $40 million over 21 years. The $206 million arena features luxuries such as a cigar lounge, a microbrewery, fine dining, and 1,880 club seats. Wachovia Center's oval design prevents obstructed views. Some fans say seating can often be cramped and it's worth springing for better seats at Wachovia Center.
Getting There and Getting Around
Wachovia Center is located at 3601 S. Broad St. Parking can be difficult when simultaneous events are held at the Wachovia Complex. Suburban visitors can take regional rail to Suburban Station and board an express Orange line subway from Broad and Market Streets. ADA accessible seating and companion seating at Wachovia Center should be purchased in advance. Elevators are located in the VIP Lobby and near Sections 109 and 110. Head sets and receivers for the ADA approved enhancement system are available at the Guest Services Desk. Fans can rent binoculars on site as they are placed under each seat.
