Air Canada Centre Soars to New Heights
When Toronto was awarded the National Basketball Association's (NBA) 28th franchise, plans for Air Canada Centre really got off the ground. Designed as a multi-use facility, Air Canada Centre is the native soil for the Toronto Raptors, now the only NBA team based outside of the U.S. The Toronto Maple Leafs of the National Hockey League (NHL) signed on as tenants of Air Canada Center after their owner, Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment, acquired the Toronto Raptors. Air Canada agreed to sponsor the facility for $40 million over 20 years and the facility's name took flight.
Air Canada Centre opened in February 1999 with a basketball and concert seating capacity of 19,800 seats and 1,000 fewer seats for Toronto Maple Leafs hockey games. The Toronto Raptors' practice court is built in the arena and a 12-story office tower houses owners and sponsors. It takes four to six hours to convert Air Canada Centre from basketball mode to full hockey set-up. The National Lacrosse League's (NLL) Toronto Rock also inhabits Air Canada Centre. The Toronto Rock won the 2005 NLL Champion's Cup, the first team to play a championship season at Air Canada Centre.
Air Canada Centre includes 1,020 club seats and three different types of suites. The self-contained Best Buy Theatre housed inside Air Canada Centre seats 5,200. As the largest theater in Toronto it features medium-sized concerts and family shows. Whether Air Canada Centre is hosting the 2004 World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) SummerSlam, warming up the neighborhood with Sesame Street Live, or showcasing Bon Jovi, Gwen Stefani, Willie Nelson, or Dave Matthews Band, it offers experiences for fans of all ages. Air Canada Centre's three restaurants, two bars, and a Molson brewery provide choices for any palate.
The facades of the Canada Post Delivery Building, which previously occupied Air Canada Centre's site, make up a prominent aspect of the Toronto Raptor's facility design and preserve some of Toronto's history. The flat steel roof 40 feet above the facades improves acoustics inside Air Canada Centre and makes the building look like a hangar from above. Sometimes referred to as "The Hangar," Air Canada Centre cost $265 to build.
Getting There and Getting Around
At 40 Bay St. Air Canada Centre is close to Union Station, which services the TTC subway and GO Transit system of commuter trains. Some 13,000 paid parking spots are available near Air Canada Centre as well. Walkers can access Air Canada Centre from the downtown core and Union Station via the covered PATH walkway system. Air Canada Centre designated 1 percent of fixed seating located throughout the building for the disabled and their companions. All public restrooms and food service counters are wheelchair accessible and include lower-access amenities. Air Canada Centre also equips all washrooms with baby changing tables and smaller urinals for children.
