New Jersey Nets a Strong Sports and Concert Venue
Continental Airlines Arena in East Rutherford, New Jersey, is home to the National Basketball Association's (NBA) New Jersey Nets as well as the National Hockey Leagues's (NHL) New Jersey Devils, winners of three Stanley Cup titles in the last nine years. For New Jersey Nets games, Continental Airlines Arena can seat 19,968 and slightly more for college basketball games. Seating capacity drops to 19,040 for New Jersey Devils hockey games and rises to 20,000 for concerts. Continental Airlines Arena also hosts Seton Hall Pirates men's basketball. Continental Airlines Arena together with Giants Stadium and Meadowlands Racetrack comprise the Meadowlands sports complex.
The $85 million Continental Airlines Arena was originally called Brendan Byrne Arena. A $29 million naming rights deal spanning 12 years changed the name to Continental Airlines Arena in 1996. Other teams that have played home games at Continental Airlines Arena include the New Jersey Red Dogs / Gladiators of the Arena Football League (AFL), the Major Indoor Soccer League's (MISL) New Jersey Rockets, the New Jersey Rockin Rollers of Roller Hockey International (RHI); and the National Lacrosse League's (NLL) New Jersey Storm. The New York Cosmos also hosted indoor soccer games at Continental Airlines Arena. In 1982, Continental Airlines Arena hosted the NBA All-Star Game and Continental Airlines Arena hosted the 1984 NHL All-Star Game and the NCAA Men's Final Four in 1996.
Plans are in place for the New Jersey Nets and the New Jersey Devils to each move to a new arena. The New Jersey Devils expect to occupy their new home in Newark in late 2007. Continental Airlines Arena plans to modify its configuration for concerts which will reduce seating by 4,000. Billy Joel and Elton John, Bon Jovi, Madonna, Eminem, Celine Dion, U2, Eric Clapton, and Britney Spears are but a few of the events hosted in the acoustically acclaimed Continental Airlines Arena. Family events at Continental Airlines Arena have included Sesame Street Live, Disney on Ice, WWE, Harlem Globetrotters, Champions On Ice, and Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus.
Getting There and Getting Around
Continental Airlines Arena is at 50 State Route 120. A new parking structure may still be under construction as part of the Xanadu modifications. Additional parking is available near Giants Stadium and shuttles run between the facilities. Bus service via NJ Transit is another option. Designated seats for guests with disabilities should be purchased in advance. Wheelchair accessible seating is located in the lower level and, for specific events, the arena floor. ADA accessible parking is available in lots 21 and 23. Accessible restrooms are located on the concourse behind Sections 101 and 115, in the Lower Lobby, and in the Winner's Club. The arena box office lobby has a TTY telephone. Sign language interpretation may be arranged with at least three weeks written notice.
