AmericanAirlines Center
Not to be confused with American Airlines Arena in Miami, Florida, American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas, is home to the Dallas Mavericks of the National Basketball Association. The Dallas Stars of the National Hockey League also call American Airlines Center home, as do the Dallas Desperados of the Arena Football League.
In 1998, both the Dallas Mavericks and Dallas Stars wanted a new building to replace the old and aging Reunion Arena. An approval was needed from the Dallas taxpayers, who would cover a portion of the funding. The remaining cost would be covered by the Dallas Mavericks and Dallas Stars franchises. Built at a cost of $420 million, American Airlines Center construction broke ground in September 1999 and was completed in July 2001. The ribbon-cutting ceremony is on record as the largest such ceremony ever, according to the Guinness Book of World records. American Airlines purchased naming rights in March of 1999.
American Airlines Center features a unique seating bowl that was designed with fans in mind and to offer great sightlines. The seating bowl also has a retracting system that allows for a shortened floor conversion time between basketball and hockey games. Seating capacity in American Airlines Center stands at 19,200 people. Hockey games seat over 18,000 people and concerts can fill American Airlines Center with over 20,000 people.
In addition to sporting events, various other events pass through American Airlines Center each year. Disney on Ice and Harlem Globetrotters are just two examples. Concerts such as Neil Diamond and Elton John have also made stops at American Airlines Center. American Airlines Center has received almost 18 awards for various aspects of its construction.
