Does TD Waterhouse Centre Still Have the Magic?

Once praised, TD Waterhouse Centre in Orlando has lost a little of its luster but it still provides a comfortable home to the Orlando Magic of the National Basketball Association (NBA) and the Orlando Predators of the Arena Football League (AFL). In 1991, "Performance Magazine" voted the Orlando Magic's home "Arena of the Year." The Pollstar Concert Industry Awards also nominated TD Waterhouse Centre as "Best Indoor Concert Venue." But times have changed and newer arenas have raised the bar. Compared to other NBA facilities TD Waterhouse Centre ranks near the bottom when measuring capacity and luxury suites. A new arena or a complete overhaul of TD Waterhouse Centre have been proposed but no action has been taken.

TD Waterhouse Centre seats 17,248 for basketball including 26 luxury suites. It is located in the heart of Orlando and downtown residents and visitors can travel there for free. TD Waterhouse Centre is the former home of the Women's National Basketball Association's (WNBA) Orlando Miracles, the International Hockey League's (IHL) Orlando Solar Bears, and the Orlando Seals, a minor league ice hockey team.

Many national events have visited TD Waterhouse Centre. The 42nd annual NBA All-Star Game and the 1992 United States Figure Skating Nationals were held at TD Waterhouse Centre the same year. Games one and two of the 1995 NBA Finals and McDonald's American Cup Gymnastics also left their marks at TD Waterhouse Centre. The facility can expand seating to18,039 for concerts. TD Waterhouse Centre has hosted a range of events including Cher, Aerosmith and Lenny Kravitz, Keith Urban, Stars on Ice, the Superbowl of Motorsports, and Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus.

TD Waterhouse Centre opened in January 1989 as Orlando Arena and was affectionately called the O-rena. The $98-million publicly financed TD Waterhouse Centre is part of the Orlando Centroplex, a large sports and entertainment complex. TD Waterhouse Centre experienced financial problems in the late 90s when Magic game attendance was low and the cost of generating ice for the hockey teams was high. In 2000, the city sold naming rights to TD Waterhouse for $7.8 million paid over five years.

Getting There and Getting Around

There are several ways to visit TD Waterhouse Centre at 600 W. Amelia St. If you drive, parking is limited in the area near TD Waterhouse Centre. Avoid traffic congestion by using LYNX Lymmo, a free shuttle service that travels through the downtown area. LYNX bus routes provide another travel alternative. Disabled parking is located off Revere Street on the east side of the building. TD Waterhouse Centre encourages disabled guests to arrive one-hour prior to the event. The entrance and elevators on the east side of the TD Waterhouse Centre provide access for disabled guests.
