Staples Center
The Staples Center in Los Angeles, California, is home to the Los Angeles Clippers and Los Angeles Lakers of the National Basketball Association, as well as the Los Angeles Kings of the National Hockey League. As part of the Los Angeles Sports and Entertainment District, more than just sports can be seen at Staples Center.
Staples Center was constructed in just over 18 months and first opened in 1999. The $330 million cost of construction was financed largely in part by the teams in which play in the arena. Staples, Inc. paid $100 million for 20-year naming rights. Seating capacity stands at 19,000 people for hockey games, and 20,000 for basketball games. If need be, the arena can change from hosting a hockey game to ready to host a basketball game in under two hours. There is disabled seating available on all levels of the arena, with wheelchair escorts available upon request.
The first Los Angeles Lakers basketball game at Staples Center featured the Los Angeles Lakers and the Grizzlies, who were based out of Vancouver at that time, on November 3, 1999. The Los Angeles Lakers began their stay in Staples Center in the 1999-00 season, which saw them win three-straight NBA Championships in 2000, 2001, and 2002.
Various events that have been hosted at the Staples Center include the 2000 Democratic National Convention, the 2002 U.S. Figure Skating Championships, and the 2004 NBA All-Star Game. Auto racing, boxing, concerts, wrestling, and various other sporting events are held at Staples Center each year, with about 230 events in total. Each year, over 3 million people pass through the Staples Center.
Getting there and getting around
The Staples Center is located at 1111 S. Figueroa St., in downtown Los Angeles. Metro buses make frequent stops at the arena, and the closest train stop is the Pico Station on the Blue Line. Situated at the intersection of the 10 and 110 Freeways, Staples Center is also adjacent to the Los Angeles Convention Center. There is plenty of parking adjacent to the arena, including disabled parking.
