Madison Square Garden: The Best of Four
Madison Square Garden is the Mecca of sports and entertainment. Not only is it home to the National Basketball Association's (NBA) New York Knicks and the New York Rangers of the National Hockey League (NHL), and the New York Liberty of the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA), Madison Square Garden is the site of hundreds of moments of American history. Presidents and religious icons have hit the stage of Madison Square Garden. Pope John Paul II graced "The Garden," as it's often called, in 1979. The 2004 Republican National Convention and three Democratic National Conventions were held at Madison Square Garden. And then there are those memorable pieces of pop culture that Madison Square Garden gave us. The fight between Joe Frazier and Muhammad Ali was just one of the legendary boxing matches held at Madison Square Garden. Gymnastics gold medalist Nadia Comeneci scored her first perfect 10 at Madison Square Garden during the 1976 American Cup. And Madison Square Garden has hosted entertainers ranging from Bing Crosby and Bob Hope to Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, Frank Sinatra, Madonna and Pearl Jam.
Four arenas in New York, dating back to 1879, have held the name Madison Square Garden, and a fifth is currently planned. The Madison Square Garden of today includes the Arena, the Theatre, a 36,000-square-foot Expo Center, a large terrace, and two restaurants. Madison Square Garden's five ascending levels of seating have a capacity of 19,522 for basketball and 18,200 for hockey. The Garden opened in 1968 and its $200 million renovation, which included 89 suites, was completed in 1991. St. Johns Red Storm men's basketball also plays at Madison Square Garden.
The first WrestleMania and the first WNBA All-Star Game made sports history at Madison Square Garden. The Grammy Awards and the 2005 Country Music Association Awards were also held at Madison Square Garden, despite their longtime history in other cities. The facility has also hosted events for tennis, ice skating, and the circus. Madison Square Garden is the site for most large New York concerts including The Concert for New York City which followed September 11.
